Portfolio + Supporting Documents | Graduate Admissions

Your statement of intent (500-600 words) will provide the Admissions Committee with a sense of the direction you plan to take while pursuing graduate studies. Please concisely and articulately discuss the following:

• Your proposed graduate-level practice and research goals.
• Contextualize your practice and research within larger theoretical, critical, and historical frameworks (in other words, address how you situate your work in relation to contemporary art or design practice and context).

Three (3) recommendation letters are required. At least two references should be from individuals who know you or have known you in an academic capacity and are familiar with your art or design practice and research. The third reference can be submitted by an individual who knows you from a professional setting.

Request your letters early, to allow your referees sufficient time to submit them.

Letters of Recommendation are submitted by the referees electronically directly to SlideRoom. Once you provide Slideroom with email addresses, your reference requests will be automatically sent to your referees. You will receive an email confirmation from Slideroom when a letter is uploaded successfully.

Please provide a list of professional and academic experiences and credentials. Include any publications, awards and honours and other achievements.

Your portfolio will provide the Admissions Committee with a set of examples of your previous and/or current work to evaluate your readiness to pursue a graduate education at Emily Carr University.

Portfolio requirements for our Master of Fine Arts programs and our Master of Design programs are different. Read the portfolio requirements for the program you are applying for carefully.

ECU will not evaluate portfolios that include items outside of our requirements.

For Master of Fine Arts (Full-residency and Low-residency) programs:

• Submit 18-20 examples of your artwork through Slideroom. This should include:
• Single-page files of documentation of various 2D and 3D work and/or time-based media files, videos and more.
• Curate and edit your portfolio to present your strongest, most challenging, and imaginative work.

For Master of Design (Interdisciplinary and Interaction) programs:

• Submit 10-12 examples of your design projects through Slideroom. This should include:
• Multi-page files of documentation of various 2D and 3D projects and/or time-based media files, videos and more.
• Curate and edit your portfolio to present your strongest, most challenging, and imaginative work.

Record a video of yourself discussing your current practice and the ways in which you think a graduate degree will inform it in the future. The video must be three (3) minutes or less. Upload your video to SlideRoom in addition to your portfolio.

You must submit your portfolio and supporting documents online through SlideRoom.

Before you use SlideRoom please make sure that:

• You have applied through the EducationPlannerBC Application Service.
• You have used the same name on both EducationPlannerBC and Slideroom.
• You selected the right program. There are several programs listed on our SlideRoom portal; it is very important that you upload your work into the correct program that you are applying for.

You may upload images (jpg, png, gif) or video (mov, wmv, flv, mp4), music (mp3) and PDF documents.

Using the 'Submit' function in SlideRoom

SlideRoom allows you to log in, upload, and edit your portfolio as much as you like prior to pressing the 'Submit' button. However, once you click the submit button, you will no longer be able to make changes.

You must click the submit button if you want us to review your portfolio. Unsubmitted or pending portfolios will not be reviewed.
